Laurels

I think it’s interesting that just when I think I’ve figured it out, I find that I really haven’t, or things shift and change again, and I’m back to a new square one.

I’ve heard it said that we shouldn’t ‘rest on our laurels.’ Which roughly means don’t enjoy your victory so much that you stop trying. Don’t be a slacker. Don’t become complacent. The saying comes from when the Ancient Greeks made crowns out of laurel branches for the winners of sporting events. Evidently the lariats or venerable Geeks and Romans got to rest and bask in all their glory because of their victorious achievements. It only became a negative thing (laural resting), after the 1800s.

When ARE we allowed to rest? I might be tired. It’s another rainy day.

I say: let’s bring back the original! Why not enjoy a little glory? Enjoy a rest?

Let’s be thankful we weren’t born during the Victorian era when they traded enjoying victory for virtue.

Why not celebrate? I’m tired, but thinking about celebrating gives me a lighter feeling. I like the idea of pausing to take a moment to bask.

We stopped at our favorite little chef run, cozy, east coast restaurant. Before that I imagined going out, eating delicious food and perhaps enjoying a drink and having a silent toast for this leg of creative completion . I know full well that I could just run over this accomplishment, hoping for better future results, but you know what?

I decided instead, to rest on my laurel(s).
